Automatic rotation was restored in January 2025 and has been in place since. New uploads orient correctly, and any temporarily-sideways images from that window have long since refreshed out of cache.

    Happy to help with this!

Are you seeing this with all photos or specific ones?

Could you send me the photos you are seeing the issue with to ted@patinaproject.com?

Also let me know your OS version and device model.

      Ryan Savage Hey Ryan,

Thank you for the additional info. To help me dig into this further, would you mind sending me the actual photos you attempted to upload in an email attachment? Please email them directly to ted@patinaproject.com because this tool might modify the uploaded photo!

ShnyHntr91 and to anyone facing this issue:

It seems this problem stems from how Samsung devices handle EXIF metadata, which can sometimes be out of order or invalid. This is affecting how we process photos during resizing for faster app performance.

The good news is that your uploaded images are stored with the correct orientation. The issue only occurs during downsizing because the image processing library we use (libvips) currently doesn’t handle this specific metadata format. However, there’s an active discussion within the libvips community to address this, and if the proposed changes are approved, your already-uploaded photos will automatically be fixed.

For now, you have a couple of options:

    1. Use a different device for taking photos.

    2. Continue uploading with the current orientation issue, knowing it should be resolved once the library update is implemented.

If you’re interested, you can follow the technical discussions here:

Thank you for your patience as we work on resolving this! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have further questions or concerns.

    Cheers,

    Ted
